10th Anniversary releaseNew rose dedicated to the gift of life

A “Gift of Life Rose” has been specially grown to honour organ donors and their families as part of a campaign to mark the 10th anniversary year of the NHS Organ Donor Register (ODR).

The salmon/orange climber was commissioned by UK Transplant to symbolise new life, commemorating the precious gift of organ donation and how transplants can save, or dramatically improve, people’s lives.

Although a record 2,867 transplants took place last year, 443 people died while waiting due to a critical shortage of donors. UK Transplant has set a national challenge - to add one million more “lifesavers” to the ODR in the 12 months up to October 2005. To date, almost 490,000 extra people have signed up.

“Transplants are very successful and enhance the quality of life for patients and their families,” says Sue Falvey, UK Transplant Director of Donor Care and Co-ordination.

“Joining the register sends a huge message of support to the thousands of people whose survival depends upon the generosity of others. The more people who join the register, the more lives will be saved.”

Sally GunnellOlympic champion and TV star, Sally Gunnell, is supporting the call for more donors.

“Organ transplants are a medical miracle but they would not be possible without the generosity of donors and their families,” says Sally. “The Gift of Life Rose is a beautiful tribute to this kindness but also reminds us of the importance of discussing our wishes regarding organ donation with our loved ones.

“I have signed up to the ODR and told my family that I want to help someone after my death. If you feel the same way, please turn your good intentions into action and join the register today.”

People who carry a donor card are also urged to join the register too. Cards can easily get lost or forgotten which would mean that someone’s wish to leave this most precious gift might not be put into practice.
