Social networking site launched by The Transplant Trust

The Transplant Trust (formerly Transplants in Mind) has launched the UK’s first social networking site for the transplant community.

Sarah Brown, wife of the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, launched the www.thetxspace.com site during National Transplant Week from 6-13 July.

The Transplant Trust chairman, John Wallwork, said: “We are delighted to announce the launch of this vital social networking site. This is, we believe, one of the first sites of its kind in the UK.

“It will enable interested individuals to come together to share their experiences and knowledge of all aspects of transplantation. That will include clinicians, nurses and researchers plus patients, their families and carers.

“With over 8,000 people on waiting lists for transplants, sources of information are critical. This site will enable those people – and many more – to access expertise and advice, share their experiences with others, and become part of a very real online support community.

“At the same time, it will enable clinicians, like myself, plus researchers and nursing staff, to share knowledge and develop dedicated online communities. The potential is huge – the rewards are considerable, and we believe that it is a major step forward for the whole transplant community in the UK.”

The tx site has been created for The Transplant Trust by specialist marketing agency TBDA, which has built similar sites for a number of commercial clients.

The launch at No.10 Downing Street was the culmination of a week of activities to mark National Transplant Week and includes the re-naming of the charity, which was formerly Transplants in Mind. Established in 1990 to promote awareness and educate the public about organ and tissue donation for transplantation, The Transplant Trust’s new charitable status now also allows it to fund research into all aspects of organ and tissue donation and transplantation.

Audio-visual arts project features an insight into organ donation and transplantation
Nunnery Gallery, London

A stunning audio visual account of the real stories behind human organ donation and transplants is being staged by rb&hArts – the arts programme at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust.

‘Transplant’ comprises an exhibition, a DVD and a limited-edition hardback collection of essays, of which a downloadable version will be put online later this year.

Photographer Tim Wainwright and sound recordist, John Wynne, photographed and recorded over 50 patients, relatives and members of Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital staff as well as images and sounds from the hospital environment over the course a year.

Arts Manager Victoria Hume said: “In creating this exhibition, DVD and book of essays, our aim is to explore transplantation and the extraordinary issues it raises, challenging public perceptions and creating a resource for information and debate.”

A half-hour ‘composed documentary’ by John Wynne using recordings from Harefield will be broadcast on Saturday 21 June at 10pm on BBC Radio 3’s ‘Between the Ears’.

The main ‘Transplant’ exhibition will run from Friday 5 to Saturday 28 September at the Nunnery Gallery, hosted by Bow Arts. Thursday 4 September will be a private view for the ‘Transplant’ exhibition, including the launch of the ‘Transplant’ DVD and book of essays.

On Wednesday 17 September, there will be a panel discussion in the gallery broadcast live by Resonance FM, a London-based and internet radio station.

From November 2008 to January 2009, the ‘Transplant’ exhibition will be staged at the Beldam Gallery at Brunel University.

The sponsors are the Arts Council of England, The Derek Butler Trust, Harefield Hospital Charitable Fund, Royal Brompton & Harefield Transplant & VAD services charitable funds, Re-Beat, the John Lewis Partnership, and private donors to rb&hArts.

Invitation to the 1st Public Meeting of SaBTO
New King’s Beam House, London SE1

The Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues, and Organs (SaBTO) is inviting people to its first annual public meeting in London on Tuesday, 21 October. The programme is on issues surrounding ‘Variant CJD and Blood’.

SaBTO is a non-departmental public body with an independent chair and members selected by the Appointments Commission for their specific areas of expertise. It provides independent advice to the UK Government and the devolved administrations on the most appropriate ways to ensure the safety of blood, cells, tissues, and organs for transfusion/transplantation.

SaBTO also provides advice on the microbiological safety of gametes and stem cells, and considers both risk assessment and risk management options for Ministers and UK Health Departments to consider.

At their inaugural meeting, SaBTO decided that a public meeting should be held every year, focusing on a particular issue within the committee’s remit. It has been decided that this year’s meeting will focus on issues surrounding variant CJD and blood.

The public meeting will take place at New King’s Beam House in London between 2pm and 4pm on Tuesday, 21 October. If you are wish to attend, please email SaBTO@dh.gsi.gov.uk, or call 0207 972 4750 by Friday, 19 September.
