About NHS Blood and Transplant
On 22 July 2004 the Department of Health announced their proposals to form a new organisation, NHS Blood and Transplant, to which the functions of UK Transplant and the National Blood Service will transfer in October 2005. This followed their review of more than 42 Arm's Length Bodies.
In a joint statement following the announcement Sue Sutherland, the Chief Executive of UKT and Martin Gorham, the Chief Executive of NBS said
"Although we have no further detailed information at present the Chief Executives and Boards of both organisations are acutely aware of the importance of the services that both organisations provide to patients in the NHS and we will be working to ensure that this significant, and in some cases unique, contribution is not compromised in any way. In addition we intend to ensure that the strengths in both organisations are maximised to improve yet further our services to donors, potential donors and recipients. In doing that we will seek to build on the excellent collaborative work in which we are already jointly engaged."
Both authorities welcomed the proposal in news releases.
